Frequently Asked Questions for a Newborn Session
Frequently Asked Questions for a Newborn Session #1: How long does a newborn session take?
While every photographer and every newborn baby is different, a typically newborn session with me at Daisies and Frogs Photography typically lasts about 2-3 hours. All my newborn sessions are "baby led". What is "baby led"? A Baby Led session entails just that...the baby will lead the way of the session. While I try my best to achieve various poses and props that my clients would like in their images, I will not make an attempt to pose their newborn baby in a manner that would be dangerous or cause the baby to be in any distress. Babies have a unique way of letting us know when they are unhappy. Whether it be they are hungry, need to be changed, too hot or too cold, colic, gassy, etc....all of these can affect how long the newborn session can take. Some babies come into my Daisies and Frogs studio and sleep like champs. Some babies get easily startled and wake up with the slightest movement. No two newborn babies are the same. But, in the event that your baby will not settle for whatever reason, I will suggest we postpone the session for that day and try again in a day or two. But do not worry, I always get images of your adorable bundle of joy for you to cherish for years to come.
Frequently Asked Questions for a Newborn Session #2: When should I schedule my newborn photoshoot?
The ideal time to schedule your newborn photoshoot is as soon as possible while you are pregnant. This ensures that I reserve your due date on my calendar. Don't worry that your child typically will not be born exactly on the due date, as I will be expecting to do your newborn's photoshoot usually plus or minus 1 week from the due date. As your due date approaches, I will be checking in you to see how everything is progressing. And of course, please let me know when you do give birth so we can get your newborn session officially on the calendar.
Let's say you decide to have a newborn session after you have given birth. That's fine too, but just know that I may be booked already for that time period after you give birth.
Frequently Asked Questions for a Newborn Session #3: When is the best time to do a newborn photoshoot?
Ideally the best time to have your newborn photoshoot is between 7-14 days after birth. At Daisies and Frogs Photography, I like to do most of my newborn sessions around the 10-12 day mark. I do this for several reasons:
- It gives baby and Mom time to adapt to one another.
- Baby starts to settle into their feeding schedule, as well as allows adequate time for Mother's milk to come in if she's breastfeeding.
- It gives time for baby to heal from any post-birth surgeries they may have received (such as circumcision).
- Baby is still quite sleepy typically. As days progress, baby becomes more and more alert.
So, does that mean if your baby is past 14 days that they can not have a newborn photoshoot? Absolutely not. Like I mentioned before, every baby is different. Some babies are wide awake at 10 days old, while others I've photographed at 4 weeks slept like rock stars! Regardless of the time frame that their session takes place, I will get amazing images you wish cherish for many years to come.
Frequently Asked Questions for a Newborn Session #4: What do I need for a newborn photoshoot?
Prior to your newborn photo session, we will discuss in detail all your options for your session. Such as props, color choices, clothing, poses, etc. that align with the style of images you would like me to capture during your session. If you have a sentimental item such as a photograph of a passed loved one, special outfit, etc., please let me know so I can try to work those items into the session as well.
On the day of you session, please bring these items with you.
- Your newborn baby
- 2-3 ready-to-go feeding bottles. If you are using formula, you may leave the formula mix separate and we can mix the bottles upon arrival. If you are breastfeeding, please kindly pump to have 2-3 bottles ready. By having bottles readily available to use, this greatly helps my quickly feed your baby during the session if I feel he/she is starting to become unsettled and get hungry. Don't worry if you are breastfeeding, as using the bottle for a few short feedings during your session will not detour your baby from reattaching to the breast for future feedings.
- Pacifier. I do keep new pacifiers on hand in the event that you forget yours.
- Extra diapers and wipes. I also have a supply of newborn diapers and wipes to use if you run out.
